Sweet Liberty Table Runner
Hi Everyone,
It is me Julie from The Intrepid Thread. I am most fortunate to be able to bring you this tutorial for a fun 4th of July holiday table runner. This one is so quick I bet you could have it whipped up this weekend for your supper on Monday.
Before we get started here is a link to a printable PDF version so you can print this out if you like.
Okay … ready… set… go!

From Each White Background Print Cut:
1 – 3 1/2” by WOF
From Each Red Background 1/8th yd cut:
1 – 3 1/2” by WOF
From Red Background ¼ yd cut:
2 – 3 1/2” by WOF
Instructions:
1. Alternating your red and white fabrics, sew one set of three and one set of four strips together. (See below for the order)
2. Take your four stripe piece and cut it down to 30 1/2” long. (This might need to be trimmed again if your WOF is not at least 42”)
Here is your 3 stripe piece. Just trim it up to 42 ” if it needs it.
Set aside your two stripe pieces.
3. Grab your 1 7/8 and 2 3/8 white squares and mark a line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.
4. Put the white squares right sides facing (mark should be up facing you) with their matching blue squares and sew ¼ inch away from both sides of the line that you marked. ( Sorry, it is a tiny bit hard to see in the picture.)
Cut on the marked line to separate the two halves. Open your half square triangles and press to the dark side.
Set aside the larger half square triangles for later.
5. Make 7 friendship star blocks by putting together your half square triangles with your 1 1/2” squares of blue and white. They go together like this:
Set aside your friendship stars for later
6. Grab the larger half square triangles you made, the 2” blue squares, and one white 3 ½” square. Lay them out like this to make a variable star block:
It will look like this when it is done:
7. Now we will make our wonky star units. Grab your 3 1/2” blue paisley squares and your 2 ½” by 3 ½” white rectangles. Lay one rectangle diagonally across the bottom corner of one of the squares. Make sure that the rectangle crosses the center of the square at the bottom and that when sown and folded down it covers the bottom corner. I illustrated in the picture approximately where the new corner will be once this is sewn ¼ away from the edge of the white piece and folded down.
Sew ¼ inch away from the edge of the white rectangle that is toward the corner you are making.
Fold white down and press (do not trim before hand). Turn the square over so the back is facing you and trim off the white edges so they are flush with the square.
Then trim the blue from under the new white corner.
Repeat this process for the other bottom corner. With the second rectangle make sure to cross it over a little bit on top of the first point so that you have at least enough for a ¼ inch seam. Some people don’t think that is important (if you like really wonky do it your way) I just like to have that nice meeting spot but not everyone does so do it your way. (Don't ya love it when the quilt police take a vacation?)
Repeat until you have four sections.
Oops I didn’t take a finished picture of this step but you can see it in the next picture.
8. Assemble section one of our stars:
Grab one friendship star, the last 3 1/2“ square of white, and two wonky star sections. Lay them out like this and sew them together just like a four patch:
9. Assemble section two of our stars:
Grab three friendship stars and one wonky star section and lay them out like this:
Sew them together just like a four patch.
10. Assemble section three of the stars:
Grab the last three friendship stars and the last section of wonky star and lay it out like this:
You know what to do here… right... sew it together like a four patch.
11. Assemble the star unit:
Grab the three sections you just built and the variable star you made earlier and lay them out like this:
Sew them together… all together now… like a four patch.
12. Sew the four stripe unit to the side of the stars with the red stripe at the top.
13. Sew the three stripe unit to the bottom of the stars and stripes unit.
14. When it is done it will look like this:
(oops I didn’t smooth it out nicely on my design wall)
The finished quilt top measures 21” by 42”
Quilt, bind, and enjoy!
